What else could go wrong???

Ok, I haven't been completely honest with my blogging lately and as y'all know, that's not really my style...

Things have been rough here. The company has been having financial "issues" and we haven't been paid. We are all broke and quite honestly over it. It's hard enough work as it is but top it off with being broke and not knowing when or if you will be paid makes it harder to stay positive.

This morning our second and third mates quit.

The second mate was my watch leader and a huge inspiration for me and I am really having a hard time with it.

These two mates are so amazing, they really know their shit and made me feel really safe and completely confident in our ability to sail the boat safely and now I am nervous.

I just want to get to Key West.

It's hard to be excited about Cuba when you have no money to spend on seeing the sights and getting out and about.

We are supposed to leave today but who knows. We aren't allowed to go to Cuba till the 22nd so basically we will just be out there sailing around for the next 12 days. That sucks. That's a long time to be at sea with no fresh water showers or time away from the boat or time to yourself.

Thank god for the crew we have left. It's going to be interesting to see how we deal with the loss of 2 very important crew members. I feel sorry for the first mate, now he has even more on his shoulders to deal with. Everyone does.

Oh well.

See ya in Cuba, or somewhere, or the Bahamas, or Key West if everything falls through.

  2. The situation sounds cruddy, but sometimes crap does happen, even to those with the best of intentions. Be tough, persevere, do what good you can, and maybe things will work out well in the end. Perhaps a new gig will come up, or something serendipitous will happen. Fate fortune and luck play their hands in subtle and mysterious ways!

    Good Luck!

  3. David said it very well. AND I'm proud of you for hanging in there and not jumping ship. Cause I would of at the first sight of not getting paid.

  5. Sheesh, I thought you guys left yesterday. I know you want off this job very badly. Just hang in there. I hate that your watch leader left, are you talking about J?

If they don't pay you by the time you get to Key West we can take it up with the labor board. If you are working for a US boat they have to pay you.

  6. Si si Ur Momma makes a really good point! You need to get paid girl. Follow up on that! See if they can dump you off in San Carlos! :) Tee hee. Okay just kidding.
Yeah there's actually probably several things you could do to get paid from this trip. Let us know what happens when you hit KW.

  7. Hi Jolea,

We don’t know each other, but I’m sure we have a lot in common.

My husband and I live in Dallas and are preparing to take a break from our corporate jobs to go cruising aboard our sailboat, Kaleo, out of Galveston.

Just wanted to let you know that I find your blog fascinating and wanted to encourage you as you make your way to Key West.

May "fair winds" certainly take you there and know that you have fellow sailors supporting you.

    Kind regards,
    Christie
